AEW: Dynamite Review - February 10th, 2021

AEW Dynamite
February 10th, 2021
Daily’s Place - Jacksonville, FL

Commentary - Jim Ross, Excalibur, & Tony Schiavone

Last week, KENTA shocked the world when he showed up on AEW Dynamite dropping Jon Moxley with a GTS. Despite his refusal to too sweet Kenny Omega post show, the two team up tonight to face Jon Moxley & Lance Archer in a Falls Count Anywhere Match!

1) Darby Allin (c) vs. Joey Janela - TNT Title Match

These two had a crazy match for PWG a few years back so they have some deep history and I’m pretty scared they may seriously hurt themselves on national television based off what they’ve done in the past. Thankfully they remained fairly tame, but this still banged as an opener. They throw bombs early, then Janela starts beating the shit out of Darby following dropping him head first off the apron and gaining some separation. Allin fights back and you know his comeback ruled. Some awesome nearfalls in the last few minutes before Darby hits the coffin drop to retain.

Match rating - ***1/4

They run down the STACKED card for tonight then send us to Jon Moxley in a parking lot. He hypes up tonight’s main event as “unsanctioned fun” and that he is gonna drop KENTA on his head. He's also sporting his IWGP US Title for the first time on AEW TV.
Sammy Guevara & MJF get the rest of the Inner Circle to leave the room so they can try to talk things out. MJF uses his slyness to get Sammy to say he wants to take over the Inner Circle, which he does sarcastically, then reveals he was recording their conversation. Sammy takes his phone, throws it at the wall then kicks MJF in the nuts. LMAO.

2) Cody Rhodes & Lee Johnson (w/ Arn Anderson) vs. Peter Avalon & Cezar Bononi

This is all about Lee Johnson getting his first win in AEW and he looked fantastic. Cody let him have the hot tag and Johnson gave us one hell of a flurry and finishing run before getting his first victory ever in the company. WE LOVE THAT. This was fun.

Match rating - **3/4

The Young Bucks are backstage. They’re asked about what happened last week as far as Gallows & Anderson interfering in the tag battle royal. Gallows & Anderson walk up and mention the ratings comparison to NXT and say they’re the reason for that. They talk the Bucks out of being upset with them and say they should be mad at Santana & Ortiz for eliminating them. The Bucks agree and decide they want to defend the titles against Santana & Ortiz next week! Ooo I smell a possible title loss so we get Inner Circle at war for the titles at Revolution?

Backstage, Hangman Page is doing an interview, but Matt Hardy walks up and invites him to the bar for a drink. Page reluctantly agrees, but runs into Dark Order on the way out and it’s AAAAWKWARD.

3) PAC (w/ Rey Fenix) vs. Ryan Nemeth

Nemeth sells so damn well, just like his brother. PAC is amazing working on top here in this prolonged squash. Nemeth gets a HUGE DDT that spikes PAC on his neck to get a small advantage. It doesn’t last long though as PAC throws him into the railing outside and hits the Red Arrow before forcing him to tap out. Satisfactory squash.

Match rating - **1/4

Miro is pissed as fuck at Chuck Taylor & Orange Cassidy. Miro promises to put Chuck in the hospital with Trent. We cut to Chuck & Orange on a couch watching the vignette. Orange says “what did they think was gonna happen?” And he & Chuck toast.

Jericho, Hager, & Wardlow are backstage for an interview. He & MJF’s match is next, but MJF acts as if he can’t compete as he rats out Guevara for hitting him earlier in the locker room. They head to the ring despite this, MJF’s ribs are wrapped and he’s selling them like death.

4) Chris Jericho & MJF vs. The Acclaimed

Lots of Inner Circle bullshit interference here, but this is very fun despite it. The Acclaimed get a great showing and have Jericho & MJF on the rocks, even getting one close fall that felt like it may be an upset victory, but Jericho kicks out and eventually hits the Judas Effect for the victory.

Match rating - **3/4

After the match, SAMMY GUEVARA FINALLY LEAVES THE INNER CIRCLE. He tells Jericho he quits and is done. Fun moment Mike pointed out to me is Sammy contemplating which tunnel to go down as he left and then going down the baby face one. LETS GO.

After the commercial, Alex Marvez catches Sammy in the parking lot. He says he needs time to refocus and get away from this place.

Hangman Page & Matt Hardy are at the bar. Hardy tries to get Page to sign a contract to work for him or whatever like Private Party did. Page agrees, but as Hardy leans into the camera, Page switches the contract with one from his jacket and tricks Matt into signing it without Matt knowing he switched them. Matt runs off happy. Wonder what’s in that contract of Page’s? And what’s gonna happen when Matt finds out Page pulled the switcharoo?

Tony Schiavone brings Sting out. Taz almost immediately interrupts and he & Hobbs have a beaten Darby Allin in a body bag tied to their SUV. They pull off insanely fast, dragging him in the bag across the parking lot. Sting retreats from the stage “in hot pursuit” in the words of Excalibur.

Alex Marvez found Kenny Omega on the golf course earlier today with Don Callis. Omega says he’s gonna put on a show tonight whilst Callis helps him cheat his way to a hole in one.

5) Leyla Hirsch vs. Thunder Rosa - AEW Women’s Title Eliminator Tournament Match

First match in this big tournament!! I liked Leyla the first few times I saw her when she competed for AEW and we all know how good Thunder Rosa is. This was a perfect little kick off to the US side of this tournament. Leyla brings such a different twist to things with a lot of MMA inspired holds and the way they worked that into some cool counters and moves was awesome. Hirsch goes for a moonsault twice and is never able to nail it. It ends up costing her the match as Rosa drops her on her head with a michinoku driver-esque move for the win.

Match rating - ***

Tony Schiavone is with Jungle Boy. He says if he steps in the ring with Dax Harwood again he will make him his bitch.

6) Kenny Omega & KENTA (w/ Don Callis) vs. Jon Moxley & Lance Archer - Falls Count Anywhere Match

One of the biggest matches in Dynamite history here and it’s great. It’s not a match filled with insane spots, but did we really expect glass and super off the wall shit here? We shouldn’t have. Anyway, this rocked. It felt like a classic TV brawl wrestling main event like we’d get in the glory WWF days. They worked the stip by fighting into the back and into the kitchen at daily’s place. They worked in a number of fun spots and a gasp worthy win in the form of KENTA’s diving double stomp from the stage to Mox on a table on the floor. That RULED. The finish got nuts with Jake The Snake and the Good Brothers getting involved. Kenny teased a V Trigger on Jake, but Mox brought a barbed wire bat in and laid into him. The numbers are just too much, though, and Anderson & Gallows help Omega lift Archer’s big ass up for a fucking one winged angel. Simply nuts. That gets Omega & KENTA the victory. Omega & The Good Brothers celebrate to close the show while KENTA beats on Moxley on the floor.

Match rating - ****
