Buyer's Guide for PWG's 5 for $40 Winter Sale

For the past several years, PWG has done a winter sale where you can get 5 DVD's for only $40. After months of waiting, the sale has finally returned! This sale is the perfect chance for you to save big on events (and compilations) from arguably the best wrestling company in America, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.

With this sale brings the question - what DVD's should I get?

I've had many people tweet me asking this question because most are aware that I'm an avid PWG fan and while I don't have every single show, I have alot of them. And the ones I don't have, I've done my research on. With that being said, I've decided to put together a buyer's guide for this sale to help new fans of PWG decide what shows would suit them best.

If you've never watched PWG before, but have heard how awesome it is, now is the best time to pick up some events and see the spectacle that is PWG for yourself. So, below I've put together certain packs that you can choose from that may help you decide what shows to get.

But before we get into it - you can take advantage of this great sale by visiting prowrestlingguerrilla.com/merch/winter!

Please note, these aren't official packs put together by PWG, you can get any combination of the DVD's included in the sale, these are just packages I've put together to give new fans something to go by when trying to decide what DVD's to get.

The Five Star Package - 2007 Battle of Los Angeles Night 3, Guerre San Frontieres, Steen Wolf, Threemendous III, & 2013 Battle of Los Angeles Night 2

This package consists of what are widely known as PWG's best shows ever. Buying these shows will also touch on nearly every era in PWG history. From the starstudded 2007 Battle of Los Angeles that features Claudio Castagnoli (Cesaro), PAC (Adrian Neville), Alex Shelley, Tyler Black (Seth Rollins) among others to Guerre San Frontieres which features Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan)'s last match in PWG to Steen Wolf which features the classic Ladder Match between Kevin Steen & El Generico to Threemendous III which features the much talked about three-way tag team ladder match between The Young Bucks, Super Smash Bros, & Future Shock to the 2013 Battle of Los Angeles Night 2 which features the rise of Kyle O'Reilly & the formation of Mount Rushmore. These five DVDs showcase PWG at it's finest and feature many classic moments & matches so if you wanna know what all the hype is about, then this is the package for you!

The Tag Teams Galore Package - DDT4 2009, DDT4 2011, Threemendous III, TEN, and DDT4 2014
This package is for the fan that is looking for the art that has seemignly become lost in mainstream wrestling today - Tag Team Wrestling! PWG has always had a strong tag team divsion and these events showcase that. As you may notice, three of the DVD's in this package are called "DDT4", DDT4 is PWG's annual tag team tournament that they have been holding each year since 2007. The fact that they have a show dedicated to only tag teams is a testament to why PWG's tag team divison has always been great. There are variety of teams featured on these shows such as Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan) & Roderick Strong, Claudio Castagnoli (Cesaro) & Chris Hero, Ricochet & Rich Swann, and of course, the one team that everyone knows from PWG - The Young Bucks. The Bucks are featured prominently on each of these events and that should be reason alone for you to pick up these shows if you're a fan of tag team wrestling & have never seen them. Beyond the DDT4 Tournaments listed above, TEN and Threemendous III both feature mindblowing triple threat tag team Ladder matches reminiscent of the TLC matches between The Hardys, Dudleys, and Edge & Christian. It's utter insanity that will leave you chanting "P DUB G! P DUB G!"

The Hardcore Package - Astonishing XMas, Based On A True Story, Mystery Vortex, All Star Weekend 9 Night 1 & TEN
Do you miss the days of blood, tables, thumbtacks, chairs, and even barbwire in wrestling? Well then this is the package for you. PWG isn't a company that uses violence of this degree alot in their matches however when a feud boils to that point, they aren't afraid to put two competitors in the ring with no rules to settle their differences. These anything goes matches that feature No DQ's or countouts are called Guerrilla Warfare Matches. There have been several of them over the years and they always turn out brutal. Each of the shows listed above are headlined by a Guerrilla Warfare Match. Whether it's Kevin Steen & Super Dragon's war at Astonishing Xmas, Joey Ryan & Human Tornado brutalizing each other at Based On A True Story, Sami Callihan & Drake Younger taking violence in PWG to a new level at All Star Weekend 9, or Kevin Steen & Adam Cole clashing on two separate occasions at Mystery Vortex & TEN, there's enough carnage among these five events to keep the hardcore fanatic satisfied.

Greatest Rivalries Package Volume 1 - Kevin Steen vs. El Generico - Free Admission (Just Kidding), 2009 Battle of Los Angeles Night 2, 2011 Battle of Los Angeles, Steen Wolf, & DDT4 2013
Chances are you've heard about the Steen/Generico rivalry whether you watch Indepedent Wrestling or not because it's one of the best stories ever told in wrestling, in my opinion. I think this package is a must watch for anyone who hasn't seen anything from the Steen/Generico story because of how amazing it is. The first DVD in this package, Free Admission, features Kevin Steen & El Generico's debut in PWG in 2004 then we venture to the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles where they have arguably the best tag team match they've had together against The Young Bucks. Next up is the 2011 Battle of Los Angeles where Steen & Generico face off in the finals which leads to the epic Ladder Match at Steen Wolf where their feud reaches a new level of hatred. The final DVD in this package, DDT4 2013, is the most emotion invoking one of them all as we see Steen reluctantly team with Generico one last time before Generico leaves PWG. While Steen was visibly unhappy teaming with Generico, as the tournament goes on, their relationship improves with each match, and the end of the night, the amazing story comes to a head as Steen utters the word "Wherever you go, just know that I would be nothing without you."

Greatest Rivalries Package Volume 2 - The Chris Hero/Human Tornado feud - High Cost of Doing Business, All Star Weekend 6 Nights 1 & 2, Pearl Habra, & Life During Wartime
Many people try to claim that Indepedent Wrestling is just wrestling for the sake of wrestling with no real story behind it, but PWG has proven that claim wrong many times over the years by having some fantastic rivalries. One rivalry that comes to mind took place in late 2007-mid 2008 between Chris Hero, Candice LeRae, & Human Tornado. There are alot of twists and turns in this story. Thankfully, PWG uploaded a clip to YouTube which highlights this epic feud which you can check out below.

As you can see if you watched the clip, this storyline was very personal and pushed alot of barriers. There were many brutal matches, shocking moments, and unexpected twists. Claudio Castagnoli (Cesaro), Eddie Kingston, & Necro Butcher are all prominently involved in this story as well. So if you're looking to review some of the best rivalries then this may be the set of DVD's for you!

NOTE: There is one event called "1.21 gigawatts" which features an imporant match in this feud (Hero & Candice/Tornado & Lufisto Street Fight), however I couldn't include it because each package can only include 5 DVD's. Although, you can pick it up at Highspots.com right now for only $5 along with "Schaudenfreude" which features the early stages of this feud.

Greatest Rivalries Package Volume 3 - Mount Rushmore vs. PWG - 2013 Battle of Los Angeles Night 2, All Star Weekend X Night 1, Mystery Vortex II, Sold Our Soul For Rock N Roll, & ELEVEN
On Night 2 of the 2013 Battle of Los Angeles tournament, something happened that no one expected. Kevin Steen joined forces with The Young Bucks & Adam Cole to form Mount Rushmore. The reason this was so shocking is because The Bucks & Cole have been long time rivals of Steen's ever since they've been in PWG. It was so unexpected that it left the crowd chanting "WHAT THE F---!" Little did the PWG fans know what was to come from this moment as Steen, Cole & The Bucks, collectively known as Mount Rushmore, would viciously dominate PWG for the coming months and no one could stop them. They humiliated innocent people like Candice LeRae, screwed numerous people out of championships in order to keep gold around their waist, and ran roughshod over PWG for months. These 5 DVD's chronicle that period of time and include the formation of Mount Rushmore, Chris Hero returning to try & stop them, the rise of Candice LeRae, and ultimately, the end of Mount Rushmore's domination. Beyond that major storyline, each event is also filled with a fantastic undercard of matches so this is a package I would highly recommend picking up.

The Wolves Package - After School Special, As the Worm Turns, DDT4 2011, All Star Weekend X Night 1, & All Star Weekend X Night 2
Big fan of the TNA World Team Champions, The Wolves? See some of Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards' best matches before joining TNA by picking up these DVD's! After School Special is the event at which Davey Richards teamed with Super Dragon to defeat El Generico & Human Tornado for the tag team titles, As The Worm Turns features Davey's PWG World Title victory in a match against Kenny Omega that many people call a classic, DDT4 2011 marks the debut of Eddie Edwards in PWG alongside Davey Richards as The Wolves vie for tag team gold, and All Star Weekend X features Davey & Eddie's final two nights in PWG.

Those are just a few packages I came up with. Below I've came up with a list of shows I've reviewed or seen matches from along with the highlights from them. Also, directly below this paragraph you will find a DVD guide that @SeeTheKidWin on Twitter put together with ratings for each show ranging from "very good" to "virtually perfect."
