Ruthless Aggression Era Project: WWE Smackdown Review - August 29th, 2002

WWE Smackdown
August 29th, 2002

Steph is out to address what happened at the end of Raw. Brock and the Undisputed title are Smackdown exclusive and tonight we will have a tournament to crown a #1 contender starting NOW

1) Edge vs. Eddie Guerrero

Rematch from the “greatest summer slam ever” as Cole & Taz flaunt it. This has a lot more of a fiery pace to it compared to the SS match where Eddie really worked over Edge. Eddie tries to here but Edge is pushing hard through the pain and starts going for big shit showing urgency with the stakes of this match. Eddie pulls one of his infamous moves by bringing two chairs in, using the distraction of first chair to use the other one when Edge goes for a spear. Nice play off the SummerSlam finish.

Match rating - **3/4

Backstage, Matt Hardy tries to insert himself into the title tournament thing but Steph doesn’t seem interested.

2) John Cena vs. Reverend D-Von Dudley
This.... happened. Batista runs down after and destroys D-Von. Thank god.

Match rating - *1/4

3) Rey Mysterio vs. Rico

Good showcase for Rey Rey. Not much more than that but hell yeah. Rey wins with the West Coast POP.

Match rating - **

Hardcore Holly is trying to convince Steph to get into the contenders tournament. Dawn Marie says a phone call Steph has been waiting on his here. Holly is pissed that a phone call is more important than him.

Back from commercial, Matt Hardy disconnects the phone during said phone call to get Stephs attention. Pissed Steph rules and she makes Hardy a match with Brock and his dumbass is excited. God that beating is gonna rule.

Eddie tells Rikishi he is facing Latino Heat tonight not Eddie Guerrero. Rikishi asks how to say “back that ass up” in Spanish LMAO.

4) Eddie Guerrero vs. Rikishi

Rikishi won this bc god knows why. Post match Chris Benoit helps Eddie attack the big man viciously.

Match rating - **

Steph says it looks like Benoit is even more mad about his IC Title loss than she is so next he will face Rikishi in this tournament thing.

5) Shannon Moore vs. Tajiri

Moore flies around. Tajiri is crisp. This only gets a few minutes but is fun. Hurricane and Noble are at ringside. Moore wins with a roll up.

Match rating - **1/4

6) Chris Benoit vs. Rikishi

This show has way too many short meaningless matches. Benoit wins and we have a main event just about set up finally.

7) Brock Lesnar vs. Matt Hardy

A prolonged squash as Matt gets put in his place. The whole reason Steph put him in this match with Brock to begin with.

8) Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle vs. The Undertaker

FINALLY some good sh*t. Steph announces that The Undertaker is now on Smackdown. Huge move and another huge blow for Raw as she stole Brock and the Undisputed Title in the same week. This kinda makes the "tournament" they ran throughout the night pointless though as Taker does end up winning this. But it's so good and so much action packed into a sub 10 minute match. Just great shit all around, these three are royalty. Taker wins and is the new #1 Contender to Brock Lesnar's Undisputed Championship.

Match rating - ***1/2
